Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme

Introduction

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a vibrant development phase, with the state Government giving special emphasis for the development of women and children and addressing their concerns in a multifaceted manner through the Department of Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme.

The department has ensured the welfare of the poor. the downtrodden, women, children, senior citizens and third gender by providing innumerable opportunities for them through novel schemes implemented by the department which have won the appreciation of the entire nation.

Schemes

Girl Child Protection Scheme

“The Cradle Baby Scheme”, has set an example to other States in eradicating the evils of female infanticide and protecting abandoned infants and ensuring care and protection of children till they are placed on adoption.

The Chief Minister’s girl child protection Scheme is an innovative Scheme which has ensured gender equality and has improved the child sex ratio in Tamil nadu to 943/1000. This scheme provides an opportunity for the girl children to continue their higher education thereby improving the female literacy of the state.

Marriage Assistance Schemes:

Marriage Assistance Schemes are implemented to address the associated problems in bringing up the girl child and her marriage expenses. The state has accorded priority by providing 8 grams, 22 carat gold coin for making Thirumangalyam along with cash assistance to the parents of the girl children. The special initiative has motivated 55% of the girls to pursue higher education with enthusiasm. This scheme also provides for the marriage of orphan girls, inter-caste Marriage, Widow’s daughter’s marriage and widow – remarriage through the Marriage Assistance Schemes.

Thirumangalyam made of gold is a customary cultural requirement for marriage in many communities of TamilNadu. Where the bride is to wear the “Thirumangalyam” during her marriage and thereafter. The cost of gold often puts a burden on the parents apart from the other marriage expenses. In order to help poor parents and to encourage them to educate their daughters till the right age, Marriage Assistance Schemes were introduced by the Government. The Government provides 8 grams 22 carat gold coin for making Thirumangalyam along with cash assistance of Rs.25,000/- for Non- Graduates girls and Rs.50,000/- for Graduates girls.

The Government is implementing Five Marriage Assistance Schemes for the daughter’s of poor parents, Orphan Girls, Widows who Re-marry, Widow daughters Marriage and Inter-caste Married couples.

Five Marriage Assistance Schemes:

  1. Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme.
  2. EVR Maniammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme for daughters of poor widows.
  3. Annai Therasa Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme for Orphan Girls.
  4. Dr.Dharmambal Ammaiyar Ninaivu Widow Re-marriage Assistance Scheme.
  5. Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy Ninaivu Inter-caste Marriage Assistance Scheme.
